Sarasota County Launches Rental Assistance Program

Posted By: Eric Garduño Advocacy News , Coronavirus (COVID-19) , COVID Rental Assistance , Industry News ,

Beginning September 8, 2020, Sarasota County is providing rental assistance for residents who have been financially impacted by the COVID emergency through the Coronavirus Relief Funds (CRF) Rental Assistance program. This assistance is being administered by the Sarasota Office of Housing and Community Development and is open to residents throughout Sarasota County, including residents in the cities of Sarasota, Venice, and North Port.  Applicants may receive up to $9,000 in rental assistance covering rent for up to 5 months, on a first-eligible, first-served basis. To be eligible, household income must be at or below 80% of the Area Median Income.

For more details on the program, including eligibility and documentation requirements, please visit:  https://www.sarasotafl.gov/government/office-of-housing-and-community-development.  Individuals will be able to apply electronically at this site starting at 9AM on September 8, 2020.  Applications will be accepted through September 30, 2020.

Paper applications will be available at public libraries in the county, the Sarasota City Hall Annex, and the City of North Port Family Services Center at 10AM on September 8, 2020.  Completed paper applications must be sent by mail to the Office of Housing and Community Development at 111 South Orange Avenue, Suite 103, Sarasota, FL 34236.

As with many (but not all) CARES Act rental assistance programs, landlords will be expected to provide a copy of the property's W-9 and a copy of the lease.  You will be able to provided these documents directly to government officials after the resident has applied for assistance.

We are also aware that the Sarasota County Human Services Department is working on a separate rental assistance program which we expect will be available by mid-September. We will update this post when information on that program becomes available.
