How Can I Become CPO® Certified?

1. Traditional In-Person, 2-Day Class

BAAA and a PHTA-certified CPO® Instructor offer in-person CPO® classes in English several times a year using the CPO Pool & Spa Operator Handbook (Imperial Units – English).

Spanish Accommodations Available:

  • Spanish handbook available for reference during class

  • Spanish handbook and exam available upon request at enrollment

  • Instruction is conducted in English


2. Additional Certification Options via PHTA

Students may visit www.phta.org to locate a class that better fits their needs, including:

  • Language Options: English, Spanish, French, Ukrainian/Russian

  • Fusion Course:

    • Online coursework completed at your own pace (up to 6 months)

    • Followed by a 1-day in-person class with local code instruction and testing

    • Available in English, Spanish, and French

  • Units of Measure:

    • Imperial Units (U.S.): pounds, gallons, feet

    • Metric Units (International): grams, liters, meters

  • Virtual Classes:

    • Attend live online (Zoom, Teams, or similar platform)

    • Test through an online portal upon completion


How Do I Re-Certify?

BAAA recommends re-certification every 5 years by repeating the full course.
PHTA also offers additional renewal options:

  • Use any of the certification methods listed above

If Your Certification Is Still Current:

You may visit www.phta.org to:

  • Enroll in a Fusion course

  • Attend Day 2 only of a traditional in-person or virtual class, which includes:

    • Review of Day 1 content

    • Local codes

    • Q&A session

    • Certification exam

Meet You Instructor

Dave M. Sanders

David Sanders is a seasoned industry professional committed to helping multi-family maintenance personnel succeed both personally and professionally. His career spans hands-on trade work, engineering, construction management, and executive leadership within the multi-family and single-family residential industries.

He holds both a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and a Master of Science in Structural Engineering from Tennessee Technological University, along with a State of Tennessee Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification. David has held leadership roles with United Dominion Realty Trust and Concord Management, including Assistant Vice President, Regional Maintenance Director, and National Director.

A State of Florida licensed General Contractor and Roofing Contractor, David has also owned his own contracting firm. An active industry educator, he instructs Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and Certified Apartment Maintenance Technician (CAMT) courses and previously served as an adjunct professor teaching Construction Management. Though retired in 2024, he continues to share his expertise by training and mentoring maintenance professionals.
