Basics of Electricity
CALLING ALL MAINTENANCE TEAMS!
This 6-hour Basic Electrical Fundamentals course provides participants with a practical, hands-on introduction to residential and multi-family electrical systems. Designed for beginners and entry-level technicians, the class combines classroom instruction with real-world exercises to build foundational electrical knowledge and safe work practices.Participants will learn essential electrical terms and definitions, understand basic electrical theory, and apply proper electrical safety procedures, with a strong emphasis on Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements. Safety concepts include hazard recognition, safe tool usage, and best practices when working around energized and de-energized systems.
Hands-on lab activities focus on identifying, wiring, and troubleshooting common electrical components, including but not limited to:
- Single-pole switches
- Three-way switches
- Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI)
- Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCI)
- Circuit breakers and basic panel components
The course also introduces HVAC-related electrical components, such as contactors, relays, capacitors, transformers, and thermostats, helping participants understand how electrical systems integrate with heating and cooling equipment.By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Identify common electrical components and their functions
- Safely perform basic wiring tasks
- Apply Lockout/Tagout procedures correctly
- Understand the electrical fundamentals related to HVAC systems
