Education

The BAAA Education Department promotes industry professionalism through programs designed for all apartment personnel. Designation programs demand intensive training and cover all aspects of rental property management. Over the years, BAAA has trained hundreds of individuals in the rental housing industry.

Ongoing education is just one of the ways that BAAA is dedicated to keeping members informed with the latest education materials. Whether you’re getting certified through a professional course or just brushing up at a seminar, staying current on the ever-changing apartment industry is vital to your success.

We offer seminars throughout the year that provide information from leasing, marketing and maintenance to fair housing and legal. Most seminars allow for Continuing Education Credits for NAA Credentials. Instruction comes from nationally-recognized professionals to local specialists and governmental officials.

National Apartment Leasing Professional (NALP) Credential

Leasing professionals are the first people prospective residents meet, and often their only gauge of the property staff. This course is designed to teach these professionals skills to help them become top producers.

The NALP course includes:

  • The Leasing Interview

NALP Prerequisites NALP Candidates must have:

  • Worked in the apartment industry for at least six months (to be obtained during the candidacy period for NALP)
  • Successfully completed the seven modules listed above
  • Meet all examination requirements within 12 months of declaring candidacy for NALP

Certificate For Apartment Maintenance Technicians Credential (CAMT) 

Maintenance expenses are the single largest controllable element in any operating budget. This course is designed as an introduction for new maintenance professionals or as a refresher for the veteran employee, to give these professionals the knowledge and tools necessary to run an effective maintenance program.

CAMT training includes:

  • Seven courses
    • A non-technical courses consisting of online learning followed by online practice scenarios
    • Five technical courses consisting of classroom training followed by online practice scenarios

Non-Technical Courses:

  • Inside the Apartment Business
  • People, Projects and Profits

Technical Courses:

  • Electrical Maintenance and Repair
  • Plumbing Maintenance and Repair
  • Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) Maintenance and Repair

  • Interior and Exterior Maintenance and Repair

Programs may be taken as standalone seminars or in full to earn the industry designation 

CAMT Prerequisites:

CAMT certificate candidates must (before being eligible to receive the Certificate for Apartment Maintenance Technicians):

  • Have one year of apartment or rental housing maintenance experience;successfully completed the seven courses and online content listed above
  • Meet all examination requirements within 12 months of declaring candidacy for CAMT

Certified Apartment Portfolio Supervisor

Certified Apartment Supplier (CAS) Credential

A valued supplier partner has a deep understanding of the apartment industry. This course helps you gain that insight so you can better position your products and services to meet industry needs. This course is ideal for new salespeople and will help industry veterans gain further knowledge of apartment community operations.

This program is open to Supplier/Vendor Members and covers a multitude of industry information that will give attendees a better understanding of how apartment communities function and the challenges they face in their day to day operations.

CAS Course Includes:

  • Applicant screening, leasing contracts, and move-ins
  • Rent collection, lease renewal, the move-out process, lease termination, and eviction
  • Property management systems and their functions
  • How community managers create a positive fair housing environment
  • Minimizing risk through inspections, preventative maintenance, safety programs, and documentation
  • Addressing property and environmental hazards and crime
  • Analyzing property financial operations and underperformance
  • Monitoring property performance to achieve an owner's investment goals
  • Maximizing net operating income

    • Employment within the apartment industry in a supplier position
    • Successful completion of all CAS coursework (totaling 24 hours)

(Required for CAS Credential)    

The Supplier Success course is designed to offer an overview of the apartment industry and recommends ways that suppliers can maximize partnerships with apartment owners, apartment management companies and apartment association members. It was written by successful apartment industry suppliers with years of professional experience.

You'll learn about:

  • Understand how economic conditions have impacted the apartment industry
  • Define various types of multifamily housing
