History of the BAAA

The Bay Area Apartment Association (BAAA) was created to extend one of the longest running associations of apartment owners, managers and related professionals in the country. BAAA is the result of a merger in 1988 between the Pinellas Apartment Association, first chartered on June 7, 1928 as the St. Petersburg Apartment House Association, Inc, and the Tampa Apartment Association chartered in 1963. Today, BAAA represents almost 100,000 multi-family rental units in the Tampa Bay Area.

Through the years, the two associations grew, changed their names several times and enlarged their geographic service area. In 1988, the two associations merged and the name of the association was formally changed to the Bay Area Apartment Association to better reflect the regional identity of the membership. BAAA currently serves members in Hillsborough, Pinellas, Polk, Pasco, Hernando, and Citrus counties.

BAAA from its inception has worked to provide efficient and consistent service to the renting public by providing owners, managers, and suppliers with information, education, and training that will enhance their professional skills.

Working with the Florida Apartment Association and National Apartment Association, BAAA continues today to provide quality training, topical seminars on Fair Housing, lead paint and mold, and to monitor legislative and regulatory activities that impact owners and managers. Since 1928, the Association has realized the benefit of working with civic and elected leaders to assure the industry's ability to provide clean, affordable housing for those who seek to live in apartment homes. Those efforts continue today with BAAA's involvement with local chambers, governments, and other coalitions and associations.

In 2005, BAAA will celebrate the 77th anniversary of the Pinellas Association, the 42th anniversary of the Tampa Association and the 17th anniversary of the merger of the two associations into the Bay Area Apartment Association. The rich history of these associations and the commitment to the members, the industry, and the residents remains focused and adapts to meet the Bay area's need for quality, affordable rental housing.
